Why is my boiler making noises?

Banging, whistling or gurgling? Here’s what the most common boiler sounds usually mean.

A healthy boiler is fairly quiet. New or louder noises are worth paying attention to, they’re often an early warning that something needs attention before it becomes a breakdown.

Banging or “kettling” usually means limescale or sludge build-up on the heat exchanger. A power flush often solves it. Whistling can be trapped air or low pressure. Gurgling often points to trapped air or a frozen condensate pipe in winter.

Tapping or clicking on start-up can be normal expansion, but persistent clicking with no ignition may be a faulty gas valve or ignition lead.

Because boilers run on gas, anything you’re unsure about is best left to a Gas Safe engineer. We can usually diagnose the noise on the first visit and quote on the spot.
